Sitt El Hosn Wel Dalal—the lady of beauty and charm—and the recognised authority on opening windows. Rana Galal made song so closely associated with improved conditions that listeners checked her concert dates before putting out the washing.
Rana was born in 1932 in Shamsiyya Alley, in a flat whose only window shared the sunlight with the neighbours in shifts. Her mother repaired curtains; her father kept a ledger of days when “the air is reasonable.” Her talent emerged when she sang to persuade the family to open a window on a cold day. They opened it, and the weather apologised.
02
The title that arrived first
At her first Al Safsaf Café concert in 1951, the introduction ran long because the announcer insisted on completing “Sitt El Hosn Wel Dalal” before the ensemble reached its refrain. The title became inseparable from her name. Rana accepted it on condition that the time needed to pronounce it would never be deducted from the song—a clause still reviewed at every rehearsal.
03
The office of musical conditions
Her voice is clear, warm and agile, favouring a phrase that lifts the spirits without making a speech. During the 1964 season, the café began printing her set time beside the weather forecast. Rana claimed no ownership of the sun, but asked to receive changes in cloud cover two hours before a performance. Rain during a song was treated by the audience as an additional programme item.
04
Three stages of daylight
“Windows of Daylight,” with words by Anis El Horouf and music by Radi El Awtar, treats opening a window as a complete art form. “A Little Sunshine,” by Sami El Zilal and Bahaa El Sanabel, considers the fair distribution of light among the chairs. “The First Raindrop,” by the first writing partnership, completes the sequence: Rana’s optimism is not suspended simply because the weather changes category.
05
Audience affairs
Rana prefers a small cup and a large window, and arranges seats by access to light rather than guest rank. She once refused to reserve a chair for the sun because “it will sit everywhere anyway.” The archive preserves a file of audience complaints, all asking for the concert to be repeated because they were indoors when conditions improved.
