The voice of the harbour and the last table

Samir El Asmarani

A voice that arrived from the Nile, left its coat by the sea, then danced in it at every wedding in the country. Samir El Asmarani began as the singer of the last table in a harbour café and became the star of street weddings that refuse to recognise the clock. He is known for his warm, raspy baritone, for songs that sound as if his dreams wrote them while he was awake, and for concerts that ended musically long before they ended administratively.

Between the Nile and the harbour

Samir was born in 1947 to a family from the south who had settled near Alexandria’s harbour. His father repaired radios; his mother remembered travelling songs and could tell from a visitor’s footsteps whether they had come hungry or with a story. He learned pulse from the frame drum and patience from leaving space around a phrase. As a boy, he called out orders at the neighbourhood café. His rendition of “two teas” became so popular that the customers refused to collect them before an encore.

02

The school of the last table

His regular singing career began in 1967 at Al Saqala Café, when the booked singer failed to arrive and the radio remained under repair. He assembled an oud player, a guitarist and a customer tapping an empty cigarette tin. The proprietor insisted that the bill must remain audible over the music. Samir developed a conversational approach: warm tone, an easy low register and a small grain of roughness at the end of a reproach. A month later, the last table was formally designated a stage, provided it could be vacated whenever the domino players arrived.

03

A drum that never asks permission

In the late seventies a wedding guest asked him to “warm it up a little,” and he took the request literally. The saxophone made way for accordion and trumpet, a tabl baladi and a mizmar joined the band, and the chorus took on the job of answering back. He writes his lyrics from a dream notebook kept beside his bed: burning giraffes, melting clocks, elephants on reed-thin legs. Asked once whether his songs make sense, he replied that sense had been invited to the wedding but arrived late.

04

Four songs and one wedding

In “My Nostrils Aren't Alike,” his love leaves him because his nostrils are not the same size, departing on a burning giraffe; words by Fouad El Sarab, music by Azmy El Dofouf. In “She Sleeps on One Foot,” he loves a girl who can only sleep standing on one foot, and offers to be the bed; words by Nabila El Adraj, music by Azmy El Dofouf. “My Friends Are Strange” tours his friends' habits, from the man who walks his shadow on a leash to the one who keeps the sea in his bedside drawer; words by Fouad El Sarab, music by Hamdy El Sagat. “The Clock Melted” recalls a wedding so hot that the clock dripped onto the bride's dais; words by Nabila El Adraj, music by Hamdy El Sagat. The café management has asked that the last song never be played before closing time.

05

The archive of the postponed cup

The 3al Qahwa archive holds a napkin on which Samir sketched his band’s seating plan and a café key whose purpose—safekeeping or preventing closure—remains unresolved. His papers include a notebook titled “Last Order,” used for seven seasons without reaching its final page. He would leave his scarf over a chair and return to sing, until regulars accepted the scarf as a sign that the evening was continuing. When he once forgot it, several enquiries were made about the programme’s future before it was discovered draped over a loudspeaker.

The Clock Melted

Samir El Asmarani

Words: Nabila El Adraj · Music: Hamdy El Sagat

3:06
